Help... Mills reel strip and rebuild

Post by pauljt71 »

Can anyone point me in the direction of either a video clip or further information on how to strip and rebuild the reel assembly for a Mills machine. I have attempted to fix one on a machine and cannot get everything to line up correctly. I have taken the reels apart and then reassembled. I understand how the payout fingers lock through the holes but cannot set the reels individually to the brakes in a way that everything lines up correctly on machine......

Thanks for the link. I have had a look but I think I am in deeper than this. 🤦‍♂️

The brake cogs on each reel do not line up with the brake blocks. The cogs appear to have a slotted adjuster. They also have a pin on one side but it’s all a bit messy. I will post some pictures tomorrow.

I have followed the great post showing alignment which has been completed. The problem is that even with the reels aligned with payout holes, the brake cogs do not line up with the brake lever blocks. It’s almost impossible to get all the symbols to line up with the payout window and one brake block is still not engaged when the others are.

You can also see how some of the reels have previously been altered regarding payouts.

The brake cog with the adjustable screw holes is, I think, the key to alignment?

Here are some pictures of the reels in varying stages of panic. :HaHa:

We can see from the photos that each star wheel does have a certain amount of adjustment by loosing the slotted bolts. Are you saying this is not enough to correct the position?

If not, there are a couple of things to consider. Are the brake stubs on the ends of the reel stop levers very badly worn? Funny enough, I know of another machine at the moment where the stubs are completely worn away, leading to the misalignment of the reels.

If this is not the case, then it might be worth looking at the other end of the system and adjusting the long levers themselves, rather than the star wheels.
