Eastbourne auction
Eastbourne auction
Thought I would post a summary of today’s auction in Eastbourne. With 16 lots of “in need of love” condition. I decided to go down as no way would I bid online without looking at this lot. Only two other people in the room bought machines and most sold online, I hope they viewed apparently the machines were found in a basement, damp and full of critters by the look of them....
So price summary
Lot 139 penny flick ? £400 (bought online for £510)
Lot 140 wonders 24 cup £420 (bought in room for £521)
Lot 141 Bmco? £400 (bought online for £510)
Lot 142 Saxony Allwin £360 (bought online for £460)
Lot 143 Saxony Allwin £420 (bought online for £537)
Lot 144 Saxony Allwin £460 (bought online for £587)
Lot 145 hi top £220 (bought in room for £260)
Lot 146 Mills black cherry £190 (bought in room for £235)
Lot 147 jubilee £200 (bought online for £255)
Lot 148 mills black cherry £190 (bought in room for £235)
Lot 149 Boland Brooklands £480 (bought online for £612)
Lot 150 Regina £300 (bought online for £383)
Lot 151 Regina £340 (bought online for £434)
Lot 152 Rotamint £65 (bought online for £83)
Lot 153 rotamint £65 (bought online for £83)
Lot 154 pin table £95 (bought online for £121)
Machines that interested me were the unusual BMCo looking machine with the ball control bar on lot 141. Problem was it was locked and it had a very serious attack of worm, on the back and almost certainly inside as dust was spilling out of the ball holes, also missing control knob. Nice looking machine though...
Next was the unusual German looking penny flick on lot 139. Huge machine and nice to see on old penny. Seemed a good price.
And of course the Boland machine, which oddly had a jackpot from one the mills lotted with it. With condition it hit a price though.
Most machines had issues, some more serious than others, best Saxony Allwin was lot 143. The two Beromats machines were crazy prices as they were in a terrible state and had bad pot metal rot on keys components....someone did not view

Re: Eastbourne auction
Thanks for the info and photos Tree. And yes the BMCO was def most interesting of the bunch, but you'd really have wanted to look inside that thing since it's an Auto-Pay.
Re: Eastbourne auction
Maybe not - I've seen one of these many years ago and I have a vague recollection that it's a simple coin return. Regardless, still a great machine - I would certainly have had a punt (if I'd known about the auction).
Re: Eastbourne auction
JC, it seems to have the celluloid Patent label bottom rhd that shows up on most of the Auto-Pays. Unless they Patented a simple coin return as well?

Re: Eastbourne auction
Just down the road from me but didn't have time to go. Interesting how Boland machines continue to increase in value. I think they deserve to.
Re: Eastbourne auction
Sorry JC, 10 years ago I got shot down many times for publishing up coming auctions and now I am like everyone else, hoping I am the only one who has seen them.
I was very tempted with the BMco and penny flick machines, but was very cautious given the mistakes I have made in the past with locked machines... Still I bought the pair of Mills Black Cherries, largely complete apart from one jackpot being lotted in the Brooklands sale and no doors. They came with parts box of coin cups and other parts missing. I could not change it as they had posted pictures with it, but I have lots of them spare...
Any ideas on the large penny flick machine in terms of maker or history, as it certainly is designed for the large penny and sort of worked......
Bolands machine looked complete apart from lack of door and a lot of work as rusty as hell...

Re: Eastbourne auction
Yeah, I think that unusual BMco does employ the complex and fragile auto-pay mechanism. I asked for a picture of the inside, but they said it was locked. If it's all intact, £510 may be a fair price; if not, it's an expensive box of spares.
I think these are German and made for the UK. See for example The Derby Machine, by Berliner Holz- und Metallfabrikation, Berlin, 1931 and Elite by W. Rosenkranz, Leipzig, 1930.
If not, they're a close copy of German designs. Seen a few over the years, all with slight variations.

Re: Eastbourne auction
That BMCo is a lovely machine, but as said above, would not bid on it without seeing the mech.
Would agree with that GW, they usually read "patent applied for" as in the pic of this auto payout, however, would be interesting to see if BMCo did produce a simple coin return on a machine such as this.Gameswat wrote:it seems to have the celluloid Patent label bottom rhd that shows up on most of the Auto-Pays

Re: Eastbourne auction
I was at the auction. I bought the Sega/Mills Lucky horseshoe, lot 145. It is all working now, and it's really cleaned up inside now. I've got a mate who is sorting the electrical bits out. I just need to sort the paint out. Yes, it was full of dead spiders and all sorts of muck.
I was suprised how much some of the machines went for, seeing as the condition was not the best.
I looked at the "MIlls Black Cherry" machines, and I wasn't totally sure they were Mills. I thought they could be Buckley, but I could be wrong.
I did get the Tom Boland machine spinning when I first looked at it, so it wouldn't take too much to get it looking nice. I was going to bid on it but it went much to high for my budget.
I think I breifly spoke to Treefrog while I was paying for my lot, hello again mate.

Re: Eastbourne auction
Hello everyone. I am the guy who bought the Regina Beromats at Eastbourne Auctions. I did view them before bidding and realised just how bad a condition they were in. That was why I was keen to buy both machines so I could make one good one out of the two. Of course I would have preferred to pay the £40 to £60 estimate but the other guy bid me up
I have just about finished the long restoration now so I will post a short video showing the result soon.

Re: Eastbourne auction
Well done Tallstory.......good to hear more of them getting put back into useable states. Finished the two Mills Black Cherry’s which I had already shared (two on right).....wonder if any of the wall machines have been put back to usable states yet

Re: Eastbourne auction
Just looking at this thread again and in particular the BMCo, never seen a BMCo with a retractable flat bar above the cups before and I assume that the hole in the circular plate just below the escutcheon is for a knob or lever that would have activated this bar, allowing the ball to drop into the cups. I can't make out the lettering on the celluloid plate but the wording shape suggests 'patent No xxxxxxxxx' as apposed to 'patent applied for'
Another interesting and intriguing machine from Charles Featherstone, love the case styling.
