Aristocrat Clubman & Clubmaster
Re: Aristocrat Clubman & Clubmaster
Wasn't happy with my sanding and paint on the two larger panels. The two pics show my first attempt. Have now been stripped, sanded and primed. Pics to follow.
Re: Aristocrat Clubman & Clubmaster
Finally got the chrome pieces back. Started the red inlay straight away. Sorry about light flashes.
Re: Aristocrat Clubman & Clubmaster
Final piece, ARISTOCRAT badge.
Handle is a little hard to get in with the new plating.

You can get a belt of carborundum that goes on a belt sander.
Cut it open, wrap it around the boss, grip it with one hand and turn the handle, you'll only need a few microns off.

Re: Aristocrat Clubman & Clubmaster
Just thought I would do a bit of an update on the timeline of the Aristocrat history. I was always very confused by the machine mentioned in the timeline Mr PM created with the New Clubman, as it looked the same as the Clubman. I then noticed there is a picture posted by Gameswat in the resources of a machine that fits timeline wise in 1954/55 which appears to have an appearance of a Clubman top and Clubmaster lower, with the associated name on the front and I suspect this is the elusive machine and design.
There is an interesting article in Loose Change from Jan 1994 about the history of Aristocrat and they mentioned that only about 1000 of the new and standard Clubmans were made. This then mentioned a new machine called the Clubmaster being introduced in 1955, much more ornate, and with a run of only 2000 machines, which was then replaced by a machine just called 'the Aristocrat', in 1958, which was the first machine to have the new Aristocrat name on it. I suspect they got this the wrong way round as we know there are many Clubmasters (would not be surprised if more than 2000 exist today), and they also have Aristocrat written on them. What is interesting is that Aristocrat developed their own Bonus feature which, although we saw an electric version on later '60s machines, was a simple mechanical version of Mills Bonus, which was supposed to be much more reliable with less components, which initially paid 18 coins like Mills and then they reduced it to 10 coins with a version called the Reward. I had noticed the patent picture on this site of the Aristocrat had an empty space in the centre top without the ornate metalwork and wondered what this was, as below:

Aristocrat Clubman

Someone on my website sent me this photo of his Aristo Clubman that MIGHT be for sale. On the plus side it's a Clubman and, I think, an early one; on the downside, it's in a bit of a mess. I'm trying to get more details of the condition. Anyone have a clue on the value as it stands?

Re: Aristo Clubman
That’s yellow… The lower casting is very plain with no metal trim or fluting which is odd. I wonder if there are any marking on it… Value, who knows? What someone's willing to pay... Which country is it in?

Not much help, unless hand luggage can travel unaccompanied, as non-essential travel to Australia's currently verboten.

Re: Aristocrat Clubman & Clubmaster
Well to add my two cents worth, equally good and bad news for any potential overseas buyer of this thing.
Good - even though it's running on 1 Shilling, that's still the same size of our current 10 cent, so in the eyes of the Aussie law this is highly illegal to own here. and serious Aussie coin-op collectors either won't touch it or possibly some bargain hunters will pay a very negligible amount, especially in current state.
Good - almost none of the Aussie slots have ever been very popular here so always been undervalued.
Bad - due to covid lockdowns all around the country local freight has skyrocketed, I just had a light weight alloy nitrogen medical dewar/flask quoted road from Perth to Qld at 3 x times the normal cost which even though I was selling as a huge bargain, killed that deal.
Bad - Almost no flights into or out of the country so overseas freight has been horrendously expensive the last 20 months! And sooo damn slow, I had small jukebox parts sent from Europe last year that I forgot where even coming they took that long. Something this heavy and fragile is just asking to be damaged in the months it will likely take. And seller is unlikely to be a knowledgeable packer of this kind of thing.
So good luck!!

Yes it is a real shame, I remember when considering some other slots from Aus, searching out professional packers who would collect and it was very difficult, now as mentioned shipping has gone mad…… containers that cost £3000 per unit from China are now costing £30000……
I will keeping dreaming

Re: Aristocrat Clubman & Clubmaster
I had a container arrive last week from China and it was horrendous at three+ times the old price(worked out around £600 per pallet (but nothing like your 10X) My shipping agent says it looks like the costs are at their peak right now and should start to drop, but, of course, they will never return to the old prices.

Not really. He has a captive audience. We need to get our stuff in whatever the cost, and he doesn't like the high costs. Sure, they get passed onto the customer, but he gets all the flack and is forced to trim his side of things to stay competitive. He's a friend anyway, someone I can talk to outside of the work environment.
Of course it's not all plain sailing:
