Thanks gameswat will take a look soon.

Caille Commercial

Post by geordy55 »

Topic merged - Site Admin.

Ok, so I’ve just picked this up from an auction house. Bit tatty on the outside but the mechanism works fine.
Does anyone with experience of these machines want to give me any help in what to be aware of when taking these apart and reassembling? Does anyone have the artwork for the wheel and the award card?
Also, would this have originally been painted or chromed?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Caille Ben Hur

Ahhh Elite auctions, what did it go for…

Not sure it is a Ben Hur. If you follow the thread on Caille Commercials you will see many similar examples.

Personally I would not touch the reel artwork, it is old and looks good. The metal parts may polish up once stripped, but also can be plated if a plater can get it to adhere…

The cabinet finish is odd and may not be original. They were mahogany veneer generally.

They are a bugger to set up right if not working, as there seem to be lots of tolerance issues or wear or both…

The case seems to have had a veneer added at a later date as under the top window, where I have removed it, there is no veneer and you can see the original mahogany finish.

Do you think it’s a genuine Caille or could it be a Clement & Whales machine? What casting numbers should I be looking for?

You must have come across the long thread and I am sure this will be linked in at some point, [merged above - Site Admin.] but if you follow you will see there is not a definitive answer. Possibly 50 stop mechs are original, but what is clear is that the heads and cabinets were made in the U.K. for U.K. market. I have owned both types and both have parts with CB stamps, but not always clear, so may have been copied…

Yep, that's about it. I'd say it was a Clement & Whales Commercial, circa 1930 and certainly not a Caille Ben Hur, circa 1908 (as catalogued). You don't see that coin head on Caille machines. Looks like it was a lot cheaper than an American Ben Hur too... !THUMBS!

Here's a Chicago-manufactured Caille Ben Hur (turn-of-the-century):

I'd suggest nickel plated finish would be most accurate. They might need brass plating first.
I've had 4, all slightly different, the one I've kept was the first I had and have pulled it down completely to remove all the operator's fiddles.
It now pays out everything correctly.
If you want a butchers', you know where I am (1.82 nautical miles, as the albatross glides).

OK, I'm hoping someone can help me out here. I've stripped and cleaned my Caille Commercial mechanism, but something is not correct.
If you look at the photo below, the sequence seems to be that when a coin is put in and the mechanism is cranked the lever B moves to the left, and lever C is pulled forward by the springs, ready to fall into the right payout hole on the disc, however Lever C is immediately pulled against the payout disc with the result that it does not spin and immediately locates a payout hole.

I was expecting the lever A to move away from the payout disc and thus pull lever C back to await a spin and a win, but it does not move far enough back to allow this as the payout slides stop it doing so. Therefore I come to the conclusion that I cannot work out how the 5 payout levers C prepare for a win and then return to their start position behind the lever B

I'm sure this is a simple fix, but I cannot work it out, so anyone who knows these machines better than I do please feel free to help out.

Just in case anyone wants some artwork for this machine, here is what I've reproduced for mine.

It needs printing on an A3 sheet

There's a 360 degree view of the mechanism in this Collector Connector video. The disc is shown spinning but payout is not shown working. :!?!:

Hello all,
I wonder if anyone has picture of a genuine Caille commercial / Ben Hur back door as I would like to make a copy.

I suspect they vary in size based on model as square edge type I think are taller than the round edge versions. See below a round edge type, with a 1cm recess all around to fit inside cabinet. Should give an idea of the fit and measure your cabinet and wall thickness.
