“Princess” re-cased Beromat with broken part

Post by phan000 »

Greetings,

Picked up this machine over the weekend. It’s in pretty decent shape, but needs a few things.

There was a shattered piece of the handle pull mechanism in a bag. Photo attached. Another broken piece is still in the machine, has yellow arrow in photograph.

I’m not really sure how it is supposed to look. If anyone has a photo they could share of a functional mech, it would be appreciated. There is also no key for the lock.Additionally, if anyone has an idea where to find this part, it would be fantastic!

The reels spin, but I’ll have to clean the slides. Not currently paying out.

Thanks in advance.

A nasty example of "Mazak Moth"
Mazak or Pot Metal or Monkey Metal is your problem there.
I've found 197 posts on this forum about the stuff and will put the links below.

If you have all of the parts it is possible you may be able use a modern 2 part epoxy like JB Weld to rebuild it.
However, if it has been stressed (possibly when it was removed from the original Günter Wulff case in the early 60s and refitted in the Princess case) the damage may be too extensive. Finding a replacement part is likely to be trifficult.

I have had moderate success over the past 40 years, so don't despair, come back if you want to discuss further.
Good luck ...

I pulled out the reel mechanism.

So far it looks like I have one broken slide, and the sheared metal pull-arm piece.

I may be able to get the piece welded, or recreated.

The slides however seem more tricky.

Are there any manuals or diagrams for this mech? I want to start dissembling the slides, but want to go about it the correct way.

If anyone has a photo of the inside of the arm side of the cabinet, with the pieces in place, it would help me visualize how it is supposed to work.

Photos attached and thanks for the help. I’m fairly confident, I’ll get it back to fairly decent condition.

There are many threads talking about the handle assembly on the site, see below one with pictures and similar discussion. One of the main causes for the inner plate to break is when the outer plate starts to warp due to delamination of the mazak metal, which causes the support posts to move and then break the inner plate. They are virtually impossible to obtain until some breaker parts come to market. I have seen someone make one, I thought it was on this site, but maybe a Facebook group out of sheet metal. Not sure you can weld this metal, it will just disintegrate.

One this that maybe possible to bond a shaped sheet of metal to the outer side of the plate holding it in position. I have seen this done on other areas where mazak rot has occurred like the coin acceptor.

The slides are more easily available, I happen to have spares. When disassembling be careful with the slide carrier and gentle tightening or undoing the bolts underneath as this is another part prone to breaking. You will workout how to take apart, but you need to remove all the arms attached to the slide assembly, bolts underneath and lift away. On these machines there are spacers at the top of the slide posts to support the extra slide for 12 coin payout…

Thank you for the helpful suggestions.

I was able to remove and inspect the slides. It appears that the top slide is fused with the second. I seem to remember that someone had this on a similar machine.

If you have a spare to replace this broken slide, it would be greatly appreciated. I’m a bit far- Florida, but more than happy to cover any cost & shipping.

Not sure how this machine ended up down here.

I am also working on finding a metal fabricator to create the broken handle assembly piece.

Thanks again!

On most of the conversions of the German Gunther Wulff machines with new cabinets and 12 coin slides, the top two are pegged together to get the top award. They then don’t use 10 coin payout like on the original format.

If you pm me a zip code I will find out how expensive shipping would be, should not be much as thin….. !THUMBS!

I like these machines as the cabinets have a quality feel with the heavy solid beech cabinets and were made locally to me, have a couple and one on YouTube

Attached are a few photos of the arm assembly plates. I don’t see any obvious warping.

Making nice progress on this machine.

Had a machine shop fabricate the broken arm assembly piece. Was pretty expensive, but came out almost exactly like the original.

Still having a bit of trouble with a few payouts- the 6 coin wins won’t pay.

Also, need to replace the lock on the coin box door. Does anyone have a photo of what it is supposed to look like? Seems very tiny and round.

I’m going to have a professional artist friend look at the glass. There are numerous pinholes, and it looks poor when backlit. Perhaps just spraying the white portions with a coat of white, and the green with green?

Thanks for all the help, especially treefrog!

The lock looks like a Lowe & Fletcher type. There's plenty on Ebay.

This is a standard mech as seen in any wall mount German unit such as Novamat and Beromat. As with their jukeboxes and any other machine, the metal is a powder mix and it's molded under intense pressure to form a metallic structure. Most German machines were made to last 3 years as they could not renew a licence. That's why so many came to the UK and were adapted for old penny or threepenny bit. I still have my Bingollette after buying it 23 years ago. That too has the monkey metal, but is still perfect, but if dropped or hit, it will shatter like glass.
