God save the King!
God save the King!
Well, no one yet has mentioned it, but today I was very proud to be British!
Just think, at the time of the last Coronation, cranes in seaside amusement arcades were only just coming back into commission, sweets only recently having 'come off the ration'; one-armed bandits were illegal in public places (and would remain so for a number of years) and Bryans hadn't yet turned their hands to producing allwins!

Hear, hear! Charles and I do share the same birthday so in his honor, I'm having an extra beverage tonight. We've come a long way in the past 74 years. Here's to many more.

Jerry, I prefer to be known as English - ask a Welsh person or Scotish person if they are British !JC wrote:Well, no one yet has mentioned it, but today I was very proud to be British
When we were travelling in Alaska, I would often ask local people if they were American or Alaskan - all emphatically said they were Alaskan; perceived identity is an interesting subject.
However returning to the topic, back in 1953 my mother made costumes for my brother and I so we could take part in a 'coronation parade' around the village, this is me standing in front of our house trying to get note out of the bugle !

I probably switch between British and English depending on the circumstance, although I think Sharron and I both tend to identify as British in general, otherwise it could get difficult - because she's Scottish by birth. As you say, perceived identity is interesting and I think can often be closer to home. On many occasions over the years, when I've told someone I'm from Kent, I get the usual (and frankly, it's getting boring now) quip "Ah, so you're a man of Kent!" To which I am forced to robustly confirm that I'm actually a Kentish man.Jerry, I prefer to be known as English

As someone who still writes and gives lectures on early British/English history, you might be interested to know the only true British are in fact the Welsh, the Romano British having retreated into Wales as a result of the pressure of the advancing Anglo Saxons (the English). Of course, there were many British who stayed put and intermarried but for true Brits, you need to look to Wales. If your ancestors were Anglo Saxon you can never be fully British (unless your John P, who earned full British citizenship years ago
Interesting that the anglo saxon word for slaves was Powys, guess where their slaves were from? just as the early Romans got theirs from Slavia giving us the word slave in the first place.
by the way aggree, you said
and "god save the King" Im a monarchist through and through, and I'm glad he got his turn, he's been leaving the roller skates on the stairs for years hoping to get a chance before he died of old age.

Why, thank you, Coppinpr. If the Welsh are the original Brits, I may apply under that exception. My paternal grandfather was Tom Thomas, a Welshman. Unfortunately, he died before my father was born. A gentleman by the name of Peterson adopted my dad and I got stuck with that name.unless your John P, who earned full British citizenship years ago
