The end of The Seaside Arcade?
Re: The end of The Seaside Arcade?
I recall a number of years when getting a regular train from London daily, I was a frequent friend of the buffet car propping up the bar. Fridays were especially busy with long queues and being a cash man I always got my pint… Problem was, the network connectivity was unreliable once on the move and more than 50% of the customers only had phones and cards for payment… I used to chuckle and take the piss out of them. Never did get thumped though with my smug look.
Problem is, since Covid, soo many people were forced to electronic payments and no cash being accepted. I am afraid since then I have not got used to filling my pockets with change, but still always carry cash in case.
A real sign now is you see the Big Issue being sold on the street with card payment only… How long have we got?

I worked my whole life in a cash business, and it really suited me (the tax man,not so much) after 8 years of retirement I finally dropped my cash wallet with room for cards for a card wallet with room for cash, A good friend, working in property maintenance still gets mostly cash in, but he tells me it's using it that's the problem, large amounts are rarely accepted, £500 in is a lot of newspapers and cans of coke out.
I take cruises a lot, 3 or four a year, and have done for over 20 years, I've seen the casino slots on board change from all coins to all notes to all shipboard accounts using your cruise card or electronic ship account medallion. I still take cash with me ...but never use it, it comes home to pay the credit card bill
there is no point in changing cash for local currency when abroad, you actually get a much better deal using a multi-currency credit card which not only gives better exchange rates, but charges no fees and lets you pre load your card when the rates are good.

I just imagine Big Banker looking at Mr. Man-in-the-street buying his fish and chips, and thinking "how can I get a cut of that?"

Sadly the decline of cash is coming and all that has been stated on this thread is true. Last night in the Indian restaurant in Worthing I paid the bill by card and left the tip in cash. The waiter said cash is king. How I agree with him.
