Re: Brenner "Ball Past The Arrow"
So yours is Mk I. There are three different mechanisms (plus minor variants), all of which pay out automatically: the first has a turning handle to set the arrow (yours), and the others have none. Mk II requires two pulls on the firing trigger to bring the ball to the firing position and set the arrow. Mk III requires a single pull of the trigger, has a slimmer cabinet, lighter mechanism, and a flat plate arrow. I've seen at least 5 variants of the backflash.
I parted with my Mk I long ago. Do you still have yours BP?
You can see a video of BP's mechanism earlier in this topic.

No I haven't Mr P. Somebody pestered me to let it go, and I wasn't overly happy with the photocopy graphics.
But it was a smashing machine.
I always thought it odd that they kept re-inventing the same game, clearly it was popular in the first place.
What do they say "If it's not Baroque ..."
I suppose it dates back to those times when advertising companies would stick up massive enamelled tin signs that would last for 20 years stating Esso Blue Paraffin 6d a gallon.

Re: Brenner "Ball Past The Arrow"
Fortunately, each iteration was an improvement. I believe the final backflash substituted the confusing numbers for stars. Attendants must have been harangued by punters saying, "I got it in the 9 and it only paid a penny!"
None of this is helping tallstory...

Re: Brenner "Ball Past The Arrow"
Thanks guys. It's useful to know it is a mark 1. Would there be a patent drawing for it somewhere?
It really is confusing having numbers that don't relate to a payout (or anything else?).

I'm afraid not.
They're supposed to indicate "number of chances to win".
Re: Brenner "Ball Past The Arrow"
I have just about completed the de-rusting and cleaning of my Brenner BPTA and beginning to investigate how the 'broken' bit of bent wire is supposed to function. I am becoming convinced that the bent wire is a later addition and a bit of a bodge. Originally it might have been a piece of steel plate sitting on two pins in photo, one of which appears to have no purpose at the moment.
I will continue to investigate and I carry on with the rebuild, but I wanted to ask those who are more familiar with Brenner machines if they would have built a machine with such a bodge.
