Hello from rural Hampshire

Nice to find this site. I've just acquired a "Royal" slot machine via auction, to join the Novomat that I've had for over 40 years (and also an electronic German m/c that works on Pfennigs). The condition seems reasonable for age, and appears to run well, but I'll have to sort out one or two payment issues (not helped by a bodge job conversion from 1d to 2p play). I'm not the most mechanically minded, so I'm sure that I'll be picking some of your brains on here.
Any idea who made the "Royal"? Mechanics appear not too dissimilar to the Novomat... but being a front-opening machine, I haven't yet had a close look.

A few games used 'Royal' in their names. POS Automatenbau, Düsseldorf made Royal in 1954, but it's electromechanical mechanism is quite different from a Novomat.

Thanks for the welcome. This is it. The electrics are limited to some very dodgy wiring for strip lights...

That's likely to be a conversion of a Novomat, or some similar German type.
Can't imagine how the 2p coin conversion was done. The original conversion to Old Penny left the payout slides perilously thin, which, along with the pot-metal castings, didn't help with longevity.

Thanks for the reply Brigham. I've yet to investigate whether all the payout sliders are properly working (I have my doubts) - all I know is that the maximum payout is 8 x 2p instead of 12 x 1d, given the thickness difference between 1d and 2p. Other adjustments for the conversion seem to involve blu-tak and other Blue Peter-associated items.

Welcome to the site, you will find it more helpful and busier than any slot forum in the world.
Definitely a UK re-vamp of a Novamat-type machine, it been seen with two or three different names, I've re-made glasses for at least three in the past including this "Duchess"

Unless I can convert back to old pennies and then sort the payouts properly, I might need one of those showing 5 coin payouts, rather than 4&8.

The 2p coin is almost 5mm smaller than the old 1d coin, so more metal would be available on each side of the slide.

It might be better, initially, to leave it on the smaller coin. It must have had new slides, unless someone has carefully brazed the penny slides up.
It would probably take the pre-decimal ha'penny as it is, which might be a little bit odd, but at least gets rid of the decimal menace.

It may have the original German slides depending on the size of the German coin used. If it was about the same size as the 2p then great, strong slides still in place. Do not try and drill them out for 1p they WILL break.

I'm just doing some new strips for this "Princess" model. Have to say, the best case I've ever seen on one of these.
