Re: Auction additional costs ...
From a quick search of the Arena sales results database, Sworders is pipped by McTear's at 37.74%, Omega at 38.8% and Hansons, whose buyer's premium seems to vary between 37.8%, 38.4% and 39.6%. (These include any VAT payable).
Another part of the equation is seller's charges.
With Sworders, for example, it's 17.5% of hammer price, plus VAT (minimum £10.00, plus VAT) per lot. This doesn't include photography charges.
McTear's seller charges, which aren't published online, "...are competitively set at industry standard..."
Omega's standard seller charges are £4.80 (£4+VAT) for all lots sold, plus 22.8% (19%+VAT) of hammer price.
With Hansons it's £5, plus VAT per lot (whether sold or unsold), plus 17.5% of hammer price, plus VAT (minimum £5).

Ive never known an auction house that wasn't run by crooks, how we all miss Coventry, good value and a day out to boot.
One thing that struck me with the list of charges above....Ebay is looking pretty cheap in comparison

I'm afraid unless you can classify your spit as a food its VAT rateableIt's enough to make you spit! (minus VAT of course!)

At the other end of the scale, Simon Drieu & Co charge £5 per lot buyer's premium and 15% seller's commission.
Snag is, they're in Jersey.

Re: Auction additional costs ...
I saw an online only farm sale last weekend go on Fri / Sat to view bid at the weekend. It finished on Monday, at 10am, one lot every 30 seconds, about 400 lots. The commission was 5% only. Yes, all the lots at the vender's farm, so no storage costs... but only 5%... Why are these auction houses greedy people?
