Arcades, Museums & Gamerooms
Re: Arcades, Museums & Gamerooms
Hahahaha - the couch has been on the chopping block for a long time, but when you buy machines you should have a back up place to sleep - always handy.
Shed extensions on the cards, and hopefully then Iβll finally be able to fit the rest of my machines in, but probably not.
The 20 foot ball bowler Iβm sure dad would love to no longer have dangling over his Corvette.

Thanks for the link! Love seeing the bonus photos. What is the Circus Romance mechanism? Is it just like a "flasher" slot machine? I can't read the instructions on it.ddstoys wrote: βThu May 27, 2021 8:25 am The upright circus machine is a 1945 Williams Circus Romance.

Itβs a love meter - select your birth month with the knob; insert your penny in the slide mech; a bell rings and it selects a random bit of BS. Hot, cold, sloppy, etc.

Weesper Automaten Kabinet Museum (just outside Amsterdam). Sadly appears to be closed now.

Re: Arcades, Museums & Gamerooms
Yes, a nicely made video of a charming little museum.
A google search brings up a 'Permanently Closed' notice:
According to the proprietor, Jelle Zijlmans (Weesper Nieuws, October 2014), although the museum attracted 10,000 visitors a year, he closed it after two years of harassment from the local authorities, and "the collection of hundreds of slot machines is sold".
But it's evident from Trip Advisor that after 2014 (and as late as October 2019) it was still open by appointment only and for booked parties. The museum website homepage contains only dead links and this message:
No phone number or contact details are given, although Google has it as: Middenstraat 37, 1381 XA Weesp, Netherlands. Phone: +31 294 416 814
It's difficult to tell. Perhaps one of our Dutch friends can give us the inside story.

Re: Arcades, Museums & Gamerooms
I thought the museum was closed permanent. At the moment am on a holiday but did send a request for visiting the museum. If I get an answer I will let you know.

Well I already got an answer and the museum is closed for good after the Covid disaster. Very sad I never visited the museum and sad some history has gone.

Re: Arcades, Museums & Gamerooms
The constant story of short lived slot museums/arcades reminds me of my years in the pub game.
Both are activities that attract enthusiasts keen to turn their hobby/interest into a living. Sadly their lack of understanding let alone skills in budgeting, fixed overheads, variables, marketing, customer care - dealing with people etc are sadly lacking.
It's not enough to have a super collection of machines or, in pubs, being able to throw a mean dart with one arm round the barmaid while supping a cheeky half.
All too often, after a season of fun, follows a year of misery and resentment as it occurs to you you're putting in countless hours merely to give money to local councils/insurance companies/utilities/landlords and not yourself. Then to top it all you lose your hobby when decisions about the future are made for you.

Re: Arcades, Museums & Gamerooms
I believe the museum at Weesper was open for almost 20 years (from 2001).
