Anothery Mystery machine from over the pond. It looks like it has seen better days... This looks likes a possible Bollands variant, with the metal base and casting hardware, although I have not seen one before. Also the mechanism seems to lack payout capability, unless I am missing something, eg upper fingers, back strap etc. This does not appear to be a Mills or at least back as far as a gooseneck.....

The seller describes the machine as early 1900s and although I laughed, has the mechanism from a pre-gooseneck type machine. The shape obviously is trying to mimic a Hi Top Jewel... This is one ugly machine that looks like it was built in a shed or at least homemade.

Up for auction is a vintage penny slot machine from the early 1900's. It was in working condition when we moved into our house back in the late 80's but it currently doesn't work. I was told it just needs the machine mounted on the inside which requires 4 screws but I can't guarantee that. When I looked at a price guide for slots back in the early 90's I remember this slot had a value of over $1000+ and it was a very rare piece. I am sure the value has gone up a lot since then

It's a German Jubu Ideal from the 1950s, no doubt intended to mimic the popular Hi-Top range. I'd guess the mech. is a revamped Mills goose neck.
The machine has no jackpot - the position usually occupied by the jackpot window actually displays the machine's licence. (German gaming machines were only licenced to operate for three years).

Thanks JC, but I still am not sure this is a gooseneck mech though. If it is, it is incomplete. If you look closely, as stated, it's either missing key payout components or is another type of primitive mechanism.

To be honest, I didn't look at the mech. too closely. Now that I have, I agree - it's not a goose neck mech. It doesn't have the usual three reel discs, but instead has three thicker discs with different indentations. I wonder whether the payouts are registered in a similar way to the Gunter Wulf machines?

The stripes across certain symbols certainly suggest it! That is in fact the way it works - I've had my hands inside a Jubu. The payout sensor bar is the higher metal thingie and the three black pieces below are the stop arms - the disks double as starwheels.

Interesting that the hand-drawn payout card in the first photo shows fruit symbols. I see no cherries, oranges, plums or sevens on the reel strips, nor is there any way that a Wulff-type mechanism could pay out on threes of a kind.

I note also that the handle is broken. A thousand? I'll charge him fifty to take it away.

Slots are like buses. Having only recently posted this thread about the "Jube" in the states and we have a lovely looking machine on Ebay in the UK.........

Something seems to be missing though... maybe a base... Where the hell do the coins go?
Even more stunning is that it has reached £210.

Only taken 6 years and another has turned up, being described as Mills, but another variant from the same family... Not sure this person will get £900 squid.

Well I finally bought one of these strange machines, the one at the last Cottees sale. Bid blind and was a little concerned it had been sold in their previous sale. Anyway, finally got around to checking it out and it 's all gummed up.

The clock was the main issue, but also one of the reel bearings was seized… typical of German machines using race bearings. The clock is bizarre and operates I guess in a similar way to a Gunther Wulff machine and has a counter balanced governor that lifts up and down instead of a fan.

The payout discs have slots of varying depths to determine payouts like a few other German machines.

Anyway, it runs smoothly now with reels that spin forever and longer than your average machine with German laws in mind, although I have kept it to about 15 seconds..

I guess the more complex and adjustable governor was needed to make sure the run time could be set to those "fair play" laws you mentioned (laws that were clearly made by someone who never played a slot machine, as any normal player is totally bored by the time the machine finally comes up with a result).
