Just seen this on EBay, is it an English version for export, or has it been messed about with?

If the question is whether it is a proper conversion to old Penny, answer is yes and would have been done back in the day, probably early 60’s, by an operator or British supplier.

Has it been messed with, well it looks very tidy, but definitely a collector restored piece and been refinished on front. Also two bits of wood have been added inside I assume to try and stabilise the cabinet, a philips screw or bolt holds on the handle assembly and the coins are jamming, some some issues there......but it looks very presentable........does this answer your question

I've not seen the square "B" central casting before. Two round "B"s are what you unusually see on a Beromat "B". As you know, these games could only be licensed for two years service in Germany. Although this led to many being exported second hand to Britain, it also led Günter Wulff to buy back his old bandits and rebuild them into new models for resale. The two "B" castings on a standard Beromat "B" could replace the original bell castings without altering the cabinet. Perhaps the square casting was for new or un-drilled cabinets.


The original Beromat (with the bell castings) was the only model the factory produced with fruit symbols, so the strips will have been replaced after export. According to automatix-club.de, the Beromat "B" introduced the improved restart button (the one which kicks the reel, rather than just releasing it).

Those two castings down each side always make me think of electrical resistors.

Have seen a number of the square B badges before, think I have one somewhere. You will find pictures in the Arena on here and think just another version.

Also on Ebay from the same seller is this strange looking machine - a Goldene Zwolf. It's innards are exactly the same as a Gunter Wulff Beromat but that case.
Anyone got any idea about how it came to look like this?

This is the German equivalent of the “Double Six”, you will see a few on this site, I have one still. Slightly different theme with dice. The machine in question obviously has been restored and refinished, maybe re-veneered, and someone has taken a lot of time on this. I think the seller who has been selling lots of his machines over last few years is a member here.

There was always a debate on whether the English instructions were made in the U.K. or by Gunther Wulff, they are very professional and identical to the German ones and seen on many models, from Primus or Arizona (an English model)...

Originally they had a nice bird's eye maple veneer and rounded corners. UK converters and revampers usually replaced this with plastic laminate, and lost the curved corners. This one, perhaps, has then had the plastic laminate replaced with a more tasteful wood veneer. See Automatix-Club.de
