What a lovely newsreel. It has a feel from an earlier era than 1983. As probably mentioned before, it is always a shame when the history of machines disappears as I doubt many that still exist will have providence passed on or remembered. What a great lady she was. !!THUMBSX2!!

You're spot on Treefrog, the history of machines often gets lost. I'm lucky I have a few of the machines from this auction, ones I used to play as a kid on a Saturday afternoon. The owner of Barrys Amusements, Mrs Minnie Delino (Chipperfield) was a remarkable lady indeed and was a friend of my mum's… she took no prisoners!!

Spent a lot of the 1970s in that arcade. Yes, Minnie closed it when she was in her 85th year. She kept her fish and chip shop and ice-cream business until she passed away in 1987. Her favourite machine was the Laughing Sailor and didn't feature in the auction as she couldn't bear to part with it. To this day it is still in her family ownership…. in Canada!!

Looks like the machines are carefully being removed while a couple of gash tables and a pack of cards are thrown over board. More done for the cameras, but very interesting.
Thanks for posting.

Charming video of my seaside town in better times. A lot of the art deco buildings in the video now sadly gone as is the very unusual Barrys building itself, all hit by mysterious fires at the dead of night while waiting for listed status.

Yes, great video. Filmed on the Palace Pier, Brighton - the vintage slots in John and Clive's 'National Museum of Penny Slot Machines' upstairs in the old theatre, before the Noble vandals ripped it down

Dennison purchased this Levitating Lady automaton in France around 1908 and built the case himself. In the 1920's his daughters revamped it into the then more current deco look. An example of the original automata (pic attached) sold at auction approx 2012 for $220,000! I was lucky enough to work on the machine for Pat Gresham in 2012 and I found an operating info label attached inside that I carefully removed to discover the original Dennison business card on the backside. At the time she was hoping to sell the machine to a coin-op collector but that never happened and I believe it went to Europe to be restored back to the original format of non coin-op without cabinet.

Another old film with an arcade scene, “The Yellow Balloon” from 1953. I only saw it at the end of the scene, but the film is being shown on Talking Pictures TV. Took a quick TV shot and could not find an online video.

Machines not working .... all you need is Cathy :D

the only thing that was missing from this film was Benny Hill
