Ball Catching Games were originally made in Britain, in tall mahogany or oak cabinets with elegant brass fittings and plush-lined playfields. They perfectly fulfilled the nascent amusement industry's demand for a "game of skill". The balls were composite or bone with half a dozen knobs and levers, making them long-winded to play by modern standards. The hugely successful German Clown (1913) with only two controls, automatic payout and a metal ball, changed that. The genre peaked in 1934 with the introduction of the multi-ball Payramid by the Bryans Works of Derby. Although entertaining and popular, their relatively slow game cycle made them less lucrative for operators than the allwins.

Trickler

On this tallest of wall machines the object is to gain a high score by catching the ten balls as quickly as possible as they emerge from the top. If you fail to catch a ball in the first 'cup', you have three more chances. The game has good play value and makes a satisfying din as the balls descend. Players could compete against each other, or prizes could be offered for top scores. These were recorded by the dial at the top and the numbered channels below. The operator would zero the dial via a button atop the cabinet after paying a prize to prevent fraudulent repeat claims.
