S Firman & Co. (Nottingham) Ltd., Clifton Engineering Works, Curtis Street, Nottingham. Proprietor Bert Firman repaired and manufactured parts for Mills fruit machines, fulfilling a post-war demand from traveling showmen. He developed a large jackpot suitable for the large British penny, to accommodate the showmen, converting their Poinsettia bull-nosed jackpots to this larger jackpot. The company went on to build a number of machines some apparently recycling parts from American bandits, others entirely manufactured in house. Firman retired in the early 1960s, and opened an arcade on the pier at Skegness. |
